London Style Porter – Propeller Brewing Co.

So, as I’ve said I would, full disclosure: Many of you will know that I work for North American Craft, and some of you will know that we represent Propeller Brewing Co. at the LCBO in Ontario.  I would be lying if I didn’t tell you that I would love to see Propeller in every liquor store across the province.  Even if I didn’t rep them, I would want to see that, because Propeller makes some incredible beers, and let’s face it, regularly available beers in Ontario from the East Coast are very limited, and in terms of craft, there is one.  Propeller ESB (an excellent beer, in of itself).  We are lucky enough to get Garrison stuff seasonally sometimes, but that’s it.  And that is a shame, because there is a heap of beer from the Maritimes that should be pleasing Ontario drinkers.  So (sales pitch), feel free to ask your local LCBO why there are so very few East Coast beers on the shelf.  Okay, now let me show you why:

CS Lewis

CS "Jack" Lewis

Okay, some of you will know I’m a fellow of faith.  And I happen to read a lot of stuff from a similar guy, a Belfast-born writer known as Jack to his friends, Clive Staples Lewis.  Most people identify him as the author of The Chronicles of Narnia (which is accurate), though it’s worth mentioning he is also one of the most cherished Christian writers of the 20th century. I quoted him in yesterday’s blog post, and it got me to thinking, then writing, and suddenly what was meant to be a quick reference at the end of the post, became a post.  So I cut it back to a quick reference, and give you this, today:

As a professor at Oxford, and later Cambridge, Lewis was not unfamiliar with the inside of the pubs near his residence.  At Oxford he was part of a group of writers called The Inklings (including JRR Tolkien) who met regularly, not just in College rooms, but also in a local pub, The Eagle and Child (or colloquially, the Bird and Baby, or just the Bird).  Read More »

Chris SchryerI regularly describe myself as an "ardent supporter of beer", which pretty well sums it up. While I'm not working or busy being a husband and dad (okay, honestly, sometimes while I'm doing those things), I am drinking beer, attending events, visiting pubs, and thinking about beer. I work at Castro's Lounge, my local bar in the Beach, where I host beer events and take part in most things beer-related.
