La Belle Crawl – Introduction

Okay, first off, sorry this took so damn long to get to.  The evening of this crawl (okay, it was a drive, but whatever), I came down with a crazy fever, caused, it turned out, by an antibiotic-resistant chest infection, which had set me up with a pretty decent case of pneumonia by the time the second course of antibiotics took effect.  I was literally on the couch for two weeks, and pretty slow and delicate for another week.  Then, of course, I had a heap of paying work to catch up on, so blogging this totally got back-burnered.  But here it is now.

So, a good friend of mine, Rob, is both a Montrealer by birth, and also a fan of nice beers.  A while back he sent me a link on Facebook showing these wooden crates Beau’s was going to be selling for lugging their lug-tread around in.  They looked pretty sweet, and Rob said he wanted one, but they were only available at the brewery.  Did I want to road-trip out there with him?  He’s no stranger to the 401-Quebec drive, as he often goes back to Montreal for visits. As Beau’s is in Vankleek Hill, which is so far east in Ontario, it’s nearly in Montreal anyways, the drive was not daunting.  Obviously, “Hell’s yes” was my approximate answer.  He pointed out that we were nearly in Montreal anyways, we ought to plan on going for a quick drink at Dieu du Ciel! and a shop for some hard to find bottles.  I added a stop at Schwartz’s Deli, because, despite my vegetarinism, I am a big foodie and also read so much Mordecai Richler that being in Montreal and not eating a Schwartz’s medium-fat on rye is basically criminal.  And so it was decided.

An early start and a Starboucks stop and we were off.  Listening to Arcade Fire and Leonard Cohen, and (I think) U2 (very un-Montreal), and chatting we made our way east to Cornwall, where we headed north.  Making our way towards Vankleek Hill.
