Another foray into the world of what we sometimes call macrobrewing, today I’m checking out Coors Banquet. My understanding is that the original Coors beer brewed way back when was known as “The Banquet Beer”. This is a nod to the original, and is different from Coors Light, which most people think of these days when talking about Coors. Immediately, the most notable thing about it, is that I clearly have been sent an American can, as there isn’t a spot of French on it, and one side has the volume in ounces. Despite my passion nearing zeal for local beer, I still have ingrained in my psyche a fascination and yearning for American beer. Especially classic-looking packages like this one, or the Yeungling cans.
Coors Banquet — Molson Coors
From a classic 12oz US-style can, Coors Banquet pours a brilliantly clear gold. A 2″ lightly fluffy head drops to a little fuzz and small ring fairly quickly. Aroma is malty, like nice clean pale malt. It actually kind of smells like walking into a brewery when they’re milling, not that I expect a lot of people to know what that smells like. Sweet and grainy, there is also a touch of some grassy hops. The taste is similar, though actually not as sweet as I was expecting. Malts are still tasting like chewing on pale 2-row (which isn’t a bad thing), and I’m not really getting any corn syrup, which makes me think either there isn’t any, or there isn’t much. Maybe a touch as the beer warms a bit, but that could be my imagination. Hops are just a little grassy herbal note toward the back of the palate, and there really isn’t any bitterness to speak of. But compared to some of the soda-sweet beers made by some of the big brewers, this isn’t bad. It’s super clean, malty and refreshing, with a fairly light body. If your regular tipple is Coors Light, you mind find the explosion of flavours a tad overwhelming, on the other hand, if you prefer the imperial stouts, this will be a pretty light-weight offering. Still, I would take this over a lot of the major labels. Even with the corny colour-changing mountains…..
