Captivator Doppel Bock — Tree Brewing Co.

Okay kids, I hope you’ve all had fun this week.  BC Beer Week has one more kick at the can; at the end of this post, it’s officially OCB Week and we’ll be all Ontario for the next 10 days or so.  But before that, I’m stoked to review another bottle from the Tree Brewery feature currently at the LCBO, their Captivator Doppel Bock.  If you remember from my post on Cameron’s Deviator Doppel Bock, in homage to the “original” Doppel Bock, Salvator, Doppel Bocks often have names that end in “ator” (I’m still waiting on Gator Doppel Bock; it bites back!). Obviously, Tree has followed in that tradition, with Captivator. Not really a classic beer in the summer, which is a shame, the big malts in these beers make them very well suited to big red meats, the kind you might be searing on a grill for the Old Boy come Sunday.  Hint hint. Let’s do it!

Captivator Doppel Bock - Tree Brewing Co.

From a great looking silk-screened 650ml bomber Captivator Doppel Bock pours an opaque dark copper red touching on brown in the centre. 1/2″ of foamy head drops to a bit of a collar fairly quickly. Aroma is huge and sweet, brown sugar, cola, banana, rye bread and a bit of spicy yeast.  Taste is also big and sweet, and super classic. Burnt sugar, brown sugar, yeasty esters, a little jammy dark fruits, banana bread and now some leafy, musty hops. I think the beer is medium bodied, but has a really generous carbonation that keeps both the weight and the sweetness well in check. Perhaps a little more hops than a textbook example, but they dry out the finish in a way that I really like. Just a fabulous take on the style, and a bottle that would honestly go so well with your BBQ this weekend. Tell Dad they named it after him and all his stories. If he likes good beer, he’ll love this one.

Cheers again, Tree. Now, roll on OCB Week!
