The Victory Cafe

So this past Friday night, after hockey, I decided it was about time to get down to the Victory. I had met Neil and Maz at a few Volo events, and had promised up and down I would stop by sometime. Before I go on, I will offer a pre-defence for the Victory: it was about midnight on a Friday, and the place was packed. Good timing alone secured us a table by the window. So I’ll continue. We sat down, and a young hipster server handed us food menus and pointed us to the beer selection. After two hours of hockey food and beer is just what we needed. The three guys I was with decided to share some meat-stuff and I picked a vegetarian option. The server returned and looked puzzled when we ordered food, “the kitchen is closed” he explained. I guess the menus were to entice us back at an earlier hour. So we ordered our beers, knowing Sarah’s shawarma and falafel was a short walk away. I had ordered the cask ale, which was Durham Signature Ale. I must say, I have never had a cask ale that had that much head (nearly two fingers) or that much carbonation. I have never had Durham’s Signature Ale, so I have no point of reference, but I suspect somebody in the bar was drinking my cask ale; like I said, it was a very busy night (****see my correction, I may well have been drinking cask. I forgot the marvel that is the hand-pump****). Regardless, whatever I was drinking was very good, and my friends enjoyed their Neustadt 10W30. For round two I thought Hop Addict was in order and it didn’t disappoint. There is no doubt, the Victory has a great selection of beers, and the three I tasted were fresh and lovely.

It being fairly dark outside, I guess I failed to appreciate the Victory’s premises; it’s huge! I went looking for the bathrooms and bank machine and got a better appreciation. It’s huge! I was also charmed by the requisite abm fee, $1.99. It really does seem so much better than $2.00 even.

I can’t wait to go back in daylight. Yes my visit wasn’t ideal, but the menu looked really good, the beer selection could keep me entertained for days, and the location is cool, with a variety of ways to drink (at a bar, by a window, in a lounge, etc). The Victory seems like my kind of bar.
